How E-Government Is Improving Service Delivery Across Nigeria

From automated passport processing to digital tax filing, e-government initiatives are transforming how citizens interact with federal agencies. Here is what you need to know.

Nigeria's e-government journey has accelerated remarkably over the past two years. Federal agencies that once relied on paper-intensive, in-person processes are now deploying digital platforms that serve millions of citizens from the comfort of their homes. The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) processed over 3.2 million passport applications digitally in 2025, reducing average processing time from 14 days to under 72 hours. Similarly, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) reported that 78% of its corporate tax filings were submitted electronically in the last fiscal year. At the heart of these improvements is the Integrated Government Systems (IGS) initiative, coordinated by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) in collaboration with OHCSF. IGS is building a unified identity and authentication layer that allows civil servants and citizens to interact with multiple government services using a single digital ID. For civil servants, the practical implication is clear: you are increasingly expected to be the frontline operators and administrators of these digital services. Understanding how government platforms work — from backend workflows to citizen-facing interfaces — is no longer the exclusive domain of IT departments. The FCSOA's Digital Governance track covers these competencies in depth, including modules on government data management, digital service design principles, and cybersecurity for public sector professionals. Officers who complete the full track receive a verified Digital Governance Certificate recognized across MDAs. E-government is not just about technology — it is about redesigning how government thinks, operates, and serves. The civil servant of tomorrow must be a confident participant in this transformation.
